How does the school handle discipline when students engage in counterproductive behaviors? At P.S. 145, when a safety occurrence happens during the school day, we take immediate and thorough action to ensure the situation is handled with care and fairness. Our dedicated Safety Coordinator, Frank Lentini, promptly initiates an investigation, speaking with the children involved as well as any potential witnesses to gather a complete understanding of the incident. Mr. Lentini communicates with parents to inform them of any incidents that have occurred, though it may sometimes take 2 to 3 business days to fully investigate and resolve the situation. We believe that discipline should always be paired with guidance, helping students develop better problem-solving skills. At P.S. 145, our approach to discipline is rooted in positive behavioral interventions, ensuring that our students learn from their experiences and make better choices moving forward.

What safety measures are in place at the school? At P.S. 145, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We have implemented a comprehensive set of security measures to ensure a safe learning environment. Our school's front entrance features an access control system which restricts the general public from simply entering the building. We have a state-of-the-art surveillance system that monitors both the interior and exterior of the building. All exits are equipped with panic bars, enabling rapid emergency egress while preventing unauthorized entry. Who do I speak to if I have a concern?TEACHER Your child’s classroom teacher is always the first person to contact if you have any concern, be it instructional or socially emotional. Teachers have designated family engagement time where you can speak to them virtually. If it is a problem that requires more attention, you may wish to make an appointment with your child’s teacher during their preparation time and meet with them either in person or virtually. All Family Engagement times and respective zoom links will be posted in the faculty directory after the school year starts. PARENT COORDINATOR If you find that situation persist, you can contact our parent coordinator, Ms. Amer, who will work with you to resolve the problem or direct you to the staff member who is best equipped to help you. Ms. Amer welcomes students and families in the morning and assists with dismissal in the afternoon. However, if you need to speak with her, please email her to make an appointment as those two times of the day her priority is student safety, and she will not be able to give you the attention your concern requires. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Occasionally, a family finds a problem to persist despite the teacher and the parent coordinator having tried to resolve it. If this is the case, Ms. Amer will coordinate an appointment with our assistant principal Ms. Wilder. PRINCIPAL On the rarest occasions, concerns may be recurring and are not as easily resolved by teachers or office staff. Once the ladder of referral has been exhausted and a matter needs to be escalated, please reach out to the principal secretary, Ms. Shpres to make an appointment with Dr. Garcia.

What languages are taught in the Dual Language programs and does my child have to speak that language to register for that class? There are two Dual Language programs: English/Spanish and English/Russian. The classes are comprised of 50% Native English speakers and 50% Native Spanish or Russian speakers, depending on which program it is. So your child DOES NOT have to speak Spanish or Russian to enroll. However, by the 2nd Grade, we require that Native English speakers demonstrate to have basic conversational skills in the respective language in order to enroll in one of the two Dual Language programs. To help support parents at home who do not speak the target language, we have partnered with Rosetta Stone so that parents have an opportunity to learn Spanish or Russian and help their children at home.

What does the school do for character development? At P.S. 145, we place a strong emphasis on social-emotional wellness through a comprehensive program designed to support our students' growth and development. SANFORD HARMONY We implement the Sanford Harmony curriculum, which enhances our focus on diversity and inclusion, empathy, critical thinking, communication, and building strong peer relationships. Students engage in morning meet ups to check in with their peers while teachers are able to assess the emotional forecast for the day of his/her class. PBIS STORE Central to our approach is a robust Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system, where students are rewarded for making good choices and exemplifying our seven core values: kindness, respect, empathy, problem-solving, teamwork, responsibility, and integrity. Our students earn honeypots throughout the week and are able to shop in our school store for student-selected items! They can rack up on small prizes or save their honeypots up for bigger ticket items. MONTHLY ASSEMBLIES To celebrate our students' achievements, we hold monthly PBIS assemblies where we recognize those who consistently make positive choices and those who show significant improvement. Our school mascot Dale also makes special appearances at these assemblies and other events, adding an extra layer of excitement as we celebrate our students' successes. MONTHLY TRIPS At P.S. 145, we take pride in recognizing and rewarding our students for their positive behavior through our PBIS program. Students who consistently demonstrate our core values and make good choices are selected as PBIS winners and earn the opportunity to participate in exciting, high-interest field trips. These special outings have included rock climbing at The Cliffs, ice-skating at Wollman Rink, and even lunch at iconic spots like Serendipity or fun-filled experiences at Dave & Buster’s. These trips not only serve as a reward for our students' hard work but also provide them with memorable experiences that reinforce the importance of making positive choices both in and out of school.
