Parent Coordinator

A Parent Coordinator in the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) is a non-instructional school-based staff member who works under the supervision of the Principal to engage families and involve them in their children's schools. The Parent Coordinator serves as a liaison between the school administration and the parent community.

What Can I Expect from my Parent Coordinator?

Welcome Families

Parent Coordinators work to create a supportive environment for parents and guardians. They may send welcome letters to parents with their contact information and hours, and post signs at the school entrance about how to reach them. They may also work with bilingual parents to help translate outreach materials.

Increase Parent Involvement

Parent Coordinators work closely with school staff, leadership teams, parent associations, community groups, and parent advisory councils to increase parent involvement in the school. They may support the work of the PA/PTA, including conducting elections.

Address Concerns

Parent Coordinators identify issues of concern to families and work with school leaders to ensure that these issues are addressed in a timely manner.

Communicate Information

Parent Coordinators communicate specific school information to families. They may also communicate with families about COVID-related protocols and quarantines.

Other Duties

Depending on the assigned title specifications, Parent Coordinators may also have other duties, such as providing tech support, public health work, family therapy, marketing schools, organizing school tours, and helping families with admissions questions. 

Who is Rania?

We are thrilled to introduce our new Parent Coordinator, Rania Amer, a valued member of the P.S. 145 family since 2017. Rania brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of both school operations and the various programs within the larger Department of Education. As a mom of two students who have navigated the New York City public school system, she offers a unique and personal perspective that resonates with our community.

Her tech-savvy skills make her an invaluable asset in helping parents navigate school systems and digital platforms. We are confident that Rania’s dedication and expertise will greatly benefit our school community, and we look forward to the positive impact she will continue to make at P.S. 145.
