School Policies
Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. School policies play a crucial role in creating a secure and nurturing environment where children can learn and grow. These guidelines help prevent accidents, manage emergencies, and foster a culture of respect and responsibility. By clearly outlining expectations and procedures, school policies protect students from potential harm, promote positive behavior, and support a harmonious community. Together, we can create a safe space where every child can thrive. Please take a moment to review the policies which are set in place to ensure the smooth operation of the school.
1
Attendance
The NYCPS requires that schools call parents when children are absent. We ask that you please click on the PS 145 Absence Form and complete it when your child is absent. To avoid receiving a phone call, contact the school’s main office (212-678-2857) when your child is home sick.
When your child returns to school after any absence, you must send a note in to the teacher on the day he/she returns to school stating the reason for the absence. If you know in advance your child will miss multiple days, please notify the teacher. A doctor’s note is required after an absence of three days or more.
2
NYC Discipline Code
All students are required to follow the standards in the Citywide Standards of Discipline and Intervention Measures also known as the Discipline Code. These standards have been implemented to maintain a safe and supportive environment for all students in the school. Please take some time to read through these standards and discuss them with your child.

Immunizations Policy
New York City has updated the school immunization requirements for the 2024-2025 school year. A list of the vaccine requirements for the 2024-2025 school year is included with this letter. Vaccines protect children from getting and spreading diseases and are required for children to attend school. Before the school year begins, you must submit proof of immunization or blood test results that show immunity for your child if they are attending child care or school. Uniform Policy
P.S. 145 is a uniform school because the school community believes that uniforms help create a focused learning environment by minimizing distractions related to clothing choices. Wearing uniforms promotes a sense of equality among students, reducing social pressure and fostering school spirit and unity. It also helps students develop a sense of pride and belonging, contributing to a positive school culture. Additionally, uniforms simplify the morning routine for families and ensure that students are dressed appropriately for school, reflecting the values and expectations of P.S. 145. The uniform policy is part of the school’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive atmosphere where every student can thrive. Our children wear a grey or navy polo with the school logo on it along with khaki pants. Children are provided two shirts and a pair of pants at the start of the school year. However, we encourage parents to buy extra shirts for those particularly hectic weeks where you may not get to the laundry. To order your child's uniform, click here.

Grading Policy
The school expects students to perform to the best of their ability. Teachers are expected to evaluate student progress on a regular basis. Students will be given assessments regularly. After the assesment is graded, it will be sent home for the parent to review and sign. A parent’s signature indicates that the parent is aware of the student’s progress. Homework Policy
Homework is an essential part of the instructional program and reinforces learning. It serves as a means for clarifying and reviewing material learned in class, for providing motivation and opportunity for individual growth, and for creating experiences of in-depth study and supplementary reading. This school year, all homework will be posted in Google Classroom. Click here to download a complete copy of the P.S. 145 Academic Grading and Homework Policy.

Cell Phones / Smart Watches Policy
Students are not permitted to use cell phones and smart watches at any time while in the school building or yard. When necessary, students may ask to use a phone in the main office to contact a parent. To ensure a focused and safe learning environment, students will be required to turn in their cell phones and smart watches to their teachers at the start of each instructional day. These devices will be securely stored and returned to students at the end of the school day. Click here to download a complete copy of the new P.S. 145 Student Device Policy.

Field Trip Policy
Field trips are scheduled by classroom teachers throughout the school year. Permission slips are sent home for each field trip that requires travel. No student is allowed to attend a field trip without a signed permission slip. If your child has to remain at school, he/she will go to another classroom for the duration of the trip. Neighborhood walking trips do not require specific permission slips. In the beginning of the school year, teachers distribute “walking” permission slips, which should be signed and returned to the teacher. By signing this slip, you give permission for your child to walk with the class to nearby neighborhood destinations.

Parent chaperones are needed for many trips. Teachers determine how many chaperones are needed for each trip, and schedule volunteers in a fair and equitable way. Due to safety considerations, younger siblings are not allowed to accompany should you volunteer to chaperone a class trip. To ensure safety on a trip, chaperones must be attentive to all of the students in attendance.

Field trips are an important part of learning however, safety is always at the forefront. If a student presents to have difficulty keeping themselves and their classmates safe during the school day in the building, it may be necessary for their parent or guardian to accompany them on a field trip for them to be able to attend. The teacher will notify the parent in advance if this situation presents itself.
